Understanding Canyon's naming system

Canyon's style of naming bikes doesn't change much when it comes to the e-bike range. Although, you'll have noticed the ':ON' at the end of each bike's name and that tells you that the bike you're looking at is an e-bike. You will also find the words 'dual battery' at the end of some bikes' names. This means that those bikes come as something of a package deal that includes an extra battery, ideal for those out there looking to do some big miles.

Then, the rest of the naming quirks follow the same style as Canyon's regular bikes. The higher the number in the title, the better the spec and the higher the price. Then the suffix, 'CF' means that the bike is built around a carbon frame and 'WMN' means it's a women's specific model which gets all of the same kit as the unisex bikes but with different contact points and suspension tunes.

On a separate note, Canyon bikes come with a little tool kit containing the manual, a torque wrench with a bit set, a shock pump, and an assembly paste.

Of course, Canyon doesn't only offer e-bikes but there's also a comprehensive range of mountain and gravel bikes.

Canyon Grand Canyon:ON

The Grand Canyon:ON is the hardtail e-MTB in the range and for 2023, it's been tweaked to be a bit more 'mountain bikey'. These changes have made the bike more capable off road, whilst still being an ideal companion for commutes to work. The latest iteration of the Grand Canyon:ON gets a Bosch Performance Line CX motor and a 750Wh battery as standard, although the 7 model offers a choice of 625, or 750Wh. Each bike runs 29in wheels, gets a 68-degree head tube angle, a 76.5-degree seat tube angle and a 460mm chainstay. These bike are built around alloy frames.

Grand Canyon:ON 9

The range topping bike in the Grand Canyon:ON range is quite a special one as it features an ABS braking system that comes as part of a collaboration from Magura and Bosch. With that, it benefits from 120mm of suspension that's supplied by a Fox 34 AWL fork. Shifting is then provided by Shimano with the Deore XT 12-speed drivetrain which is paired with Magura CTA ABS four piston brakes. This model rolls on a pair of Rodi Tryp 30 wheels which are wrapped with Schwalbe Nobby Nic Performance 2.6in tyres. Canyon has the finishing kit covered.

Grand Canyon:ON 8

The Grand Canyon:ON 8 gets everything found on the 9 models, but it swaps the fancy ABS system for simpler Shimano M6120 brakes. That change drops the price.

Grand Canyon:ON 7

£2,899 - £3,099

Coming with the option to spec either a 625Wh battery (£2,899) or a 750Wh battery, (£3,099), this model gets its suspension from a RockShox Judy Silver 29 fork and uses a Shimano Deore 12-speed drivetrain. That's combined with SRAM DB8 brakes. The bike then rolls on Rodi Tryp30 Evo wheels with the rest of the spec following suit with the pricier machines.

Canyon Neuron:ON

The Neuron:ON takes the spot as the short travel full susser in Canyon's e-bike range, promising big mile exploration efficiency. The Neuron:ON gets 130mm of travel at both ends with Canyon's Triple Phase Suspension kinematic and a Shimano EP8 motor with 630Wh (540Wh in sizes S and XS) of battery. Unlike the other bikes featured here, this one's wheel size changes with the frame size. The small frame gets 650b hoops while each of the others get 29" wheels. Moving onto the geometry, we see a 455mm reach on a large frame with a 67.5° head tube angle, a 74.5° seat tube angle, and a 435mm chainstay on the small with the rest getting 440mm measurements. Whilst there are no carbon frames in this range yet it is due to be released in June 2023, there is plenty of other neat features to shout about like the USB-C charging port to ensure your electronic devices don't die whilst you are out on the trail.

Neuron:ON 9 - £5,249

The Neuron 9 gets its suspension from RockShox with the Pike Select+ fork and the Deluxe Select R shock. Then its shifting has all been changed up from last year's Shimano XT groupset to the SRAM GX Eagle with AXS wireless technology and coupled to powerful SRAM Code R disc brakes. The bike gets a 10-52t cassette, along with 200mm brake rotors. Then all of that runs on a pair of DT Swiss wheels front and back. Those are wrapped with 2.6" Schwalbe tyres with the SuperTrail casings and the Speedgrip compound. Then, the bike is finished with a 35mm stem, a 760mm bar, and a Canyon Iridium dropper with a Fizik Terra Alpaca X5 saddle.

Neuron:ON 8 - £4,149

Second in the range, the Neuron:ON 8 comes with a Fox 34 Performance Elite fork slotted into the headtube, paired with a Fox Float DPS, both suspension units allowing 130mm of travel. Then its 12-speed shifting comes from a Shimano XT mech with a 10-51t Deore cassette and shifter. This bike gets also Shimano XT brakes with Ice-Tech pads and a four-pot caliper at the front with a two-pot at the rear to squeeze the 203mm rotors.

Neuron:ON 7 - £3,849

The Neuron:ON 7 runs a Fox 34 Rythm fork paired with a Fox Float DPS rear shock. Then it gets 12-speed shifting from Shimano's Deore range with a whopping 510% gear range. Shimano MT420 four-pot brake at the front and an MT410 two-pot brake at the rear. Then the rest of the bike is mighty similar to the rest of the range, though the rear rim sees a change to an Iridium 30.

Neuron:ON 6 - £3,349

Finishing off the range is the Neuron:ON 6. It uses a RockShox 35 Silver fork with 130mm travel up front and a RockShox Deluxe Select R rear shock. This model packs a Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain and an FSA Crank and chainring pairing. You will find Shimano hubs and Schwalbe Nobby Nic 2.6-inch tyres wrapped around TRYP 30 rims.

Canyon Spectral:ON

Next up, the Spectral:ON rocks 150mm of suspension both front and rear but it dons a mullet wheelset, so that's a 29" hoop at the front and a 650b wheel at the rear. Fun fact, it's the first e-bike to ever roll on a mullet setup. It's the brand's long-legged trail bike that's made to be capable but also fun. Each model of the Spectral:ON gets a Shimano EP8 motor and is built around a carbon frame.

The Spectral:ON's geometry sees in a 465mm reach on a large frame with a 66.5° head angle, 74.5° seat tube angle, and finally, a 435mm chainstay.

Spectral:ON CFR LTD - £11,449

The Spectral:ON CFR LTD is as the name might suggest a limited edition flagship of the range with a tasty price tag to match and new to the range for 2023. This model receives the full RockShox treatment with a Lyrik Ultimate fork and a RockShox Super Deluxe rear shock with Flight Attendant technology. You will also find a smattering of SRAM Eagle AXS in the drivetrain and Code Ulitmate Stealth brakes doing the stopping for you. The Maxxis Assegai/Minion DHR rubber combo wraps around the DT Swiss HXC 1501 wheels with a 29er upfront and a 27.5-inch wheel out the back. The bike is finished off with further wireless wonder with a 150mm RockShox Reverb AXS dropper seatpost keeping the Fizik Terra Aidon X5 saddle out of the way when you need it gone.

RockShox Lyrik Ultimate

Spectral:ON CFR - £8,999

The Spectral:ON CFR is also new for 2023 and comes equipped with the full Fox Factory spec suspension treatment. You will find a Fox 36 fork coupled to a Fox Float X shock with a piggyback reservoir design and both of course with the eye-catching gold Kashima coating. Hanging from the carbon frame is a Shimano XT rear mech with Di2 electronic actuated shifting technology. The Shimano trend continues with the 12-speed XTR cassette with 10-51t gearing. The bike also uses Shimano brakes in the guise of the top of the tree XTR four-pot calipers that anchor down on 203mm Ice-Tech rotors and pads. The rolling stock is by Reynolds with the TR 309 / TR367 rims with 2.5-inch Maxxis tyres.

Spectral:ON CF 8 - £5,749

The next bike in the line-up sees a slight downgrade to Fox Performance suspension with the 36 Rythm fork and the Float X shock. Then, there's a Shimano SLX 12-speed drivetrain with a 10-51t cassette and HYPERGLIDE+ shifting technology. Slowing things down are a pair of Shimano SLX four-pot brakes with 203mm rotors at either end and those are bolted to a pair of DT Swiss HLN350 wheels. Then the rest of the bike is finished with a mix of Canyon parts in the cockpit and the Iridium dropper propping up the Fizik Terra Aidon X5 saddle.

Spectral:ON CF 7 - £4,799

Then, there's the Spectral:ON CF 7 which sees a switch to RockShox suspension with the Lyrik Base and the Deluxe Select R shock. Much like the CF 8, this bike gets a Shimano brand on drivetrain duties but sees a shift to Shimano's Deore 12-speed range for the shifter and cassette (10-51t) but it still gets that HYPERGLIDE+ tech. The brakes change to SRAM for 2023 with their DB8 brakes with large 203mm disc rotors. Then this bike rolls on a pair of SunRingle Duroc wheels with the same finishing kit as the CF 8.

Canyon Strive:ON

The Strive:ON is a new addition to the Canyon e-bike stable for the 2023 model year. It has been designed and built from the ground up to crush e mountain bike enduro stages with the latest 600W Bosch motor technology with 85Nm torque to the three bike range. All of the bikes pack a light carbon fibre frame with a weight of 2.45 kg with a choice of battery options; from a lighter 625Wh to the long-range 750Wh battery. You will also find 170mm travel and big brakes to keep everything in check when between the tape in the alpine terrain.

A worthy mention goes out to the special attention that has been paid to the stiffness of this bike, with engineered compliance added to the seat and chain stays to increase traction and grip. All the frames feature the same motocross-inspired skid plate on the underside of the downtube. All bikes in the Strive:ON range benefit from the nimble handling associated with a mullet set-up right out of the box.

Canyon Strive:ON CFR LTD - £8,999

The Strive:ON CFR LTD sits at the top of the Strive E - mountain bike tree with a spec to match its price. This bike has been dedicated to the long-term partnership with the former Downhill World Champion Fabien Barel with a special paint finish and artwork denoting a decade-long collaboration with the mountain bike legend.

The bike is specced with all the premium kit you might expect from the RockShox Ultimate specced suspension units with a Zeb fork and Super Deluxe RC2T shock. The SRAM Eagle AXS wirelessly takes care of the drivetrain propulsion duties with their Code RSC brakes and 200mm rotors bringing things to a halt.

Rolling stock is tackled with a DT Swiss HX1501 wheelset that wears Pirelli Scorpion Enduro tyres. Whilst the finishing kit is specced with the Canyon gravity rated G5 componentry.

Canyon Strive:ON CFR - £6,699

The Strive:ON CFR sits in the middle of the range and boasts a Fox 38 Performance Elite fork and 170mm of travel, whilst at the aft end, you will notice a Fox X2 shock. A 12 speed Shimano XT drivetrain lays the power down to the DT Swiss HX1700 wheelset shrouded with Maxxis rubber. Shimano XT brakes do the stopping on this model with big 203mm helping to tame the speed in the steeps.

The Strive:ON CFR shares the same finishing kit as the flagship CFR LTD bike with Canyon gravity spec G5 on the case.

Canyon Strive:ON CFR Underdog - £5,499

As the name suggests, the Underdog props the Strive:ON range up with its subtle and stealth all-black colourway. With a Fox 38 Rythm fork and Fox Float X shock at the tail you can rest assured the suspension duties are well under control. At this price point, the Strive:ON CFR Underdog uses a Shimano Deore 12-speed mech, cassette and shifter with SRAM DB8 brakes at your disposal. As with the other higher-priced bikes in the range, this bike makes use of the Canyon G5 gravity finishing kit with a 780mm handlebar at the helm.

Canyon Torque:ON

Yet another new e-bike added to the Canyon range for 2023. The new Canyon Torque:ON is still best at home as a heavy-hitting bike park/enduro e-bike with 175mm of squish at the rear delivered using the brand's Triple Phase Suspension kinematic, and then there's 180mm at the front. There are now four bikes in the range, the top three build specs all feature the latest carbon fibre frame design that launched this year. Of these latest designs, you will see they all feature a mullet wheel size setup as well as a choice of battery sizes (unless you fit a size small frame). The largest battery on offer provides a gargantuan 900Kw to the Shimano motor. The Canyon carbon fibre material is reassuringly downhill rated with it's own G5 certification.

Moving onto the geometry, the Torque:ON on a large frame gets a 63.5° head tube angle, a 77.5° seat tube angle, a reach increased from the old design with 485mm to the new bike's 500mm, and a 445mm chainstay.

Torque:ON CF Roczen 9 - £8,599

On the top-end Torque:ON shares the name and race board number with no less than motocross legend Ken Rozcen. Its striking moto-inspired livery sets it apart from the rest of the range. On this bike, you'll get suspension from RockShox in the form of the burly Zeb Ultimate RC2 paired with a Super Deluxe Coil Ultimate shock. Then shifting is provided by a SRAM XO1 Eagle AXS mech and shifter with an XG Eagle 10-52t cassette. As for brakes, the Torque:ON 9 is stopped by a pair of SRAM Code RSC four-pot brakes with a 220mm rotor at the front and a 203mm rotor out back. Then this bike rolls on a pair of DT Swiss HFR1500 wheels that are wrapped with a 2.5" Maxxis Assegai in 3C Maxx Terra and there's a 2.6" Maxxis Minion DHR II.

Finishing off the bike is a RockShox Reverb AXS dropper post. Then, there's a "moto wide" 800mm Canyon:ON riser bar with a 35mm diameter, a 45mm Canyon stem, and a Fizik saddle.

Torque:ON CF 9 - £7,149

The Torque:ON CF 9 adopts Fox suspension with a 38 Factory Grip2 handling the front and a Float X2 at the rear. This bike gets its shifting from the Shimano XT offering with a 10-51t 12-speed cassette, and it's slowed by a pair of XT four-pot brakes with 203mm rotors at both ends. This bike then rolls on a set of SunRingle Duroc wheels with the very same tyres as the Torque:ON CF Roczen flagship model. The finishing kit also follows suit with the spendier build, but this CF 9 is specced with the Canyon Iridium dropper seatpost.

Torque:ON CF 8 - £5,749

The Canyon Torque:ON CF 8 comes in a choice of two colourways; a brighter orange or the subtle all black. This model downgrades from the CF 9 Factory series Fox suspension components to the Performance Series to save a few quid. Also, you will find the drivetrain and brakes stick with the same Japanese brand but uses the 12-speed SLX groupset in place of the XT. The rolling stock is still SunRingle Duroc wheelset shod with Maxxis rubber, and the finishing kit remains unchanged from the more expensive stablemate.

Torque:ON 7 - £4,299

The Torque 7 is the sole remaining model in the lineup that still runs the previous iteration of the Torque design. It uses an aluminium frame and geometry rather than the new carbon fibre design in the rest of the Torque:ON range for 2023. This model also retains the 27.5-inch wheels compared to the latest model mixed wheel or, as others know it, mullet setup. You will still find RockShox Zeb R with 180mm travel that is matched with RockShox Super Deluxe Select rear shock. The power is delivered from a Shimano Steps EP8 motor and put through a Deore 12-speed drivetrain. The Deore componentry continues on in the braking department with four pot calipers matched with 203mm disc rotors. RaceFace takes on the wheel duty with its AR30 model rims. The 27.5-inch Maxxis Assegai and Minion DHR II offer up the grip and control to the trail. Finally, we come to the finishing kit, which is an FSA Gradient bar and stem combo with Fizik Gravita Alpaca X5 saddle bolted to the Canyon branded Iridium dropper seatpost.

Canyon Grail:ON

Then the last bike in Canyon's e-bike range is the Grail:ON, and it fills the duties of the e-gravel bike. It comes with that very distinctive double-decker bar (and I'm not talking the chocolate kind), and it's powered by a Bosche Performance Line CX (Gen4) motor with a big 500Wh battery. Each bike in the range is built around a carbon frame and fork with 50mm tyre clearance. This range remains mostly unchanged for 2023, with the only adjustment coming favourably with lower price tags.

There are a whopping seven sizes available from 2XS right up to 2XL, and as an example for the bike's geometry a large Grail:ON sees a 413mm reach, a 71.75° head tube angle, a 73.5° seat tube angle, and a 440mm chainstay while small, XS and 2XS frames get a shorter 425mm chainstay.

Grail:ON CF 8 eTap - £5,949

Starting off with the most expensive bike in the range, this bike gets its shifting done by the SRAM Force eTap AXS set-up with a 12-speed 10-36t cassette. Then the brakes also come from SRAM with the Force eTap AXS HRD 2s and 12s levers. It rolls on a pair of DT Swiss HGC1400 Splines and they're wrapped with a pair of Schwalbe G-One Bite TLE 50mm tyres. Finally, there's a Canyon S15 VCLS 2.0 CF seat post and a Fizik Tempo Argo R3 saddle. This model comes in a choice of two colourways.

Grail:ON CF 8 - £5,099

Then the non-eTap CF 8 gets a lot of the goodness that we saw on the eTap version, but it makes a switch to Shimano GRX RX810 11-speed shifting with an 11-42t cassette and matching brakes. Then it ditches the spendy DT Swiss hoops in favour of a pair of DT Swiss HG 1800 Splines. Everything else is the same as the eTap equipped model, and it also comes in a choice of two colours.

Grail:ON CF 7 - £4,799

Then finishing off the whole range with the Grail:ON CF 7. It comes with a Shimano GRX RX812 GS derailleur with an SLX M7000 cassette offering 11 gears with an SLX 11-42t range. This bike then gets Shimano GRX RX600 brakes and DT Swiss HG 1800 Spline wheels. Everything else matches the more expensive Grail:ON CF 8. You are bound to find a Grail:ON CF 7 to suit your taste, as Canyon offer this model in no less than five different colours.
