Specialized say the new S-WORKS Recon is “The Fastest Shoe on Dirt"
Bold words from Specialized as they launch their new shoe, claiming the S-Works Recon shoe is 'the fastest shoe on dirt'. We've taken a first look at this racey off-road mountain bike and gravel shoe before handing it over to Dave, our resident 'fastest' gravel rider....

Specialized say they every part of the S-Works Recon shoe is ergonomically designed and scientifically tested to boost power, increase efficiency and reduce risk of injury. The two bolt carbon soled shoe is light and stiff and aimed at off-road riding from gravel adventuring, cyclocross or cross-country racing, using tech from the brand's top dollar road shoes.
Through their Body Geometry tech Spesh says they have designed the sole and footbed to increase power and efficiency whilst reducing the chance of injury by reducing the optimizing hip, knee and foot alignment. There's a roomy toe box, a heel construction that cradles the heel for improved acceleration and a special Dyneema Mesh between the layers of mesh and TPU of the upper which is said to create no-stretch zones for ultimate connection and comfort.
The FACT carbon plate in the sole, the brand says is their lightest and stiffest ever with a stiffness index of 13.0. To put that into perspective Spesh say the S-Works 7 road shoes have a stiffness rating of 15.0 whilst something like the Comp Mountain Bike Shoes (no carbon sole) has a stiffness rating of 6.0.
Elsewhere there are chunky rubber SlipNot heel and toe lugs for any walking, running or hurdles you might find yourself jumping. There are also two alloy CNC'd Boa S3 Snap dials which feature spring clutch internals and tiny one millimetre adjustments. Specialized say these are more durable, precise and exclusive to them.
We have a pair for test in a size 42 which we weighed in (without cleats) at 663g for the pair. They certainly scream efficiency and with clear heritage in the brand's road shoes they are sure to be top of the Christmas wish list for the off-road racers out there. We will be back soon with a full review on off.road.cc soon.
