Race Face Getta Grip lock-on grip review

Race Face’s Getta Grip Lock-On Grips provide an impressive level of grip and comfort for a relatively low price. However, the thin rubber results in little damping.

Designed with a relatively low profile, the Race Face Getta Grip Lock-On Grips are intended for all riding from cross-country to downhill. The 30mm diameter size on test was primarily used for trail riding throughout my three-month test period. Still, there's a 33mm diameter option also.

These grips use Race Face's proprietary rubber compound with a hexagonal texture at the bottom or fingertip portion of the grip and a low profile upper section. They employ a single locking ring that locks the tapered inner core that's included to prevent the grip from twisting under load. The ends of the grips are closed, too, ideal if you're good at losing bar ends.

These grips have a contoured profile that widens nearer the end of the grip. Race Face says that this is to stop your hands from ‘blowing off’ the ends of the bars, but in practice, the profile this contour creates is incredibly comfortable, and actually, it hugs the palms really nicely.

While there isn’t much in the way of texture, the hexagonal undersides stick out a little bit, giving your fingertips something to grip. They’re fairly subtle, though, so they’re not intrusive; instead, they boost grip when you’re in the attack position and putting the power down.

The grip is aided by the tacky rubber compound, which works well with, or without gloves. However, it’s not incredibly soft if you prefer some damping that softer compounds can offer. They’ve held up pretty well throughout the test period, too, with minimal signs of wear.

As they're relatively thin grips, the bar feel is really good, but this comes at a further cost to vibration damping. Thankfully, if this is an issue for you, there is the 33mm diameter grip mentioned previously.

The Getta Grips offer reasonably good bang for your buck, considering the grip, comfort and the selection of coloured collars to pick from (we've got the lovely Kash Money collars). Similarly priced grips are PNW's Loam Grips, priced at £18. These are tapered but much more textured, and the array of fins cut into the rubber summon up a good level of damping. Of course, this is all about personal preference.

If you're looking for a reasonably tacky but very grippy and comfortable pair of grips, you'll be totally satisfied with the Race Face Getta Grips. However, if you appreciate tons of damping and texture, you won't find those here.
