7Mesh Inc. Desperado Henley's Women's Jersey

The 7 Mesh Inc. Desperado Henley women's jersey is a three quarter length sleeve, stylish number fit for biking, yoga and other gym activities alike. The use of merino wool means it doubles up well as a base layer too, making for a versatile piece of kit.

At first glance, you wouldn’t think that 7Mesh’s Desperado Henley women’s jersey is a riding top at all. It could easily pass for being designed for yoga, running or just lounging around the house – and it will be great for all of these. But, there are telltale signs that it’s come from a biking stable, notably the articulated pattern and drop rear hem to give a good fit when you’re on the bike. Designed for wearing on its own in warmer weather, it’s ideal for leisure riders who don’t want to look too ‘bikey’ or quick blasts that finish at the pub.

At £65, it’s not cheap, but there are comparable products at a similar price (such as Mons Royale’s Raglan tee). The lightweight performance fabric is 53% polyester and 47% merino, so combines the benefits of both. The synthetic fibres mean it wicks sweat away well, is quick-drying and durable, while the wool helps it regulate your temperature and stay warm even when wet, plus it’s odour-resistant. Although, being only part merino, it could still do with washing after each ride. The material feels fine against the skin, although not as soft as pure merino.

The scoop neckline is quite low – slap on that suncream come summer! – and has two plastic poppers. These are easy to pull open on the fly, but you’ll need two hands to fasten them. The body is a good length, keeping your lower back covered even when stretched out on the bike. The stitched logo on the sleeve and back of neck adds a touch of class.

While the rest of the Desperado fits me well (I’m nearly 5’7 and it’s a size small), I find the ¾ sleeves too tight for my liking, and was actually aware of them against my skin. So, beware if you have big biceps! The sleeves came up quite short, sitting just below my elbow joint, and are there for a bit of added protection, according to 7Mesh.

The attention to detail is great

So, it’s a versatile piece that performs well, though the distinctive styling, and price, will probably influence your decision more. It comes in this coral, a not-all-that-different lilac-pink, and black. There’s also a men’s T-shirt version which costs £5 more (and comes in green, blue and black).
