PNW Components Range Stem Gen 3 stem review

PNW's third edition of the Range stem proves to be an excellent companion for the Range bar. Thanks to a handy GoPro mount and a range of useful markings, it's extra functional. It's a great stem, aside from a limited range of lengths and portly build.

This time around, the Range stem has received a ground-up redesign built around a chunk of CNC machined 6061 aluminium. Against the Gen 2 model, PNW says it has shed as much as 40g, depending on the length and clamp diameter you choose. The 40mm, 31.8mm clamp model on test weighs in at 163g, which isn’t terribly light.

As for the options available, there aren’t too many on offer. It comes in either 40mm or 50m lengths, both with a choice of a 31.8mm and 35mm clamp diameter. Those with longer reaches looking for shorter stems may be disappointed here.

However, there’s no denying that the Range Stem Gen 3 is a nicely made bit of kit. Its subtle graphics should mesh well with any colourway, and thanks to a range of markings, it’s easy to achieve your ideal cockpit setup. Torque recommendations are clearly marked too.

Installation is almost as easy as it could get. The top part of the stem clamp uses a ‘no gap’ kind of fixing, so you don’t have to balance the faceplate perfectly. The window in the faceplate is handy for the stem’s included GoPro mount and for aligning your handlebar logo in the centre.

Speaking of that GoPro mount, it’s a super handy addition, allowing seamless and easy mounting of lights, cameras, or anything else that uses a similar fixture. It’s easily removed, too, in case you’re not a fan of the look.

As for price, the PNW Range Stem Gen 3 is right on the money at £69. It's £1 cheaper than the Nukeproof Horizon stem and over £10 cheaper than Spank's Split stem, which Jim reviewed last year. However, the Range Stem Gen 3 doesn't size up as short as either of those, and it's a good few grams heavier, too.

If you don't mind a bit of extra weight and you don't need the shortest of stems, the PNW Range Gen 3 stem is a great choice. It's nicely made, and the GoPro mount is a super handy feature, especially if you're partial to the odd night ride where light is needed. If you're already running a Range Gen 3 handlebar, the stem is a must-have for matching graphics at the very least.
